Articles | Ford Mustang Notchback No.24 George Alderman - Build

By Neil Hirst

For the Trans-Am event at our club i entered the over 2L class so i decided to build the Ford Mustang Notchback No.24 car as driven by George Alderman using a Pioneer white kit. As i only race ready & complete cars like Slot.it, NSR building a car like this was a bit different than im used to. The George Alderman's car was a 1965 Notchback, I was using the Pioneer kit which is a Ford Notchback 1968, im not sure what minor difference's are but it looks the same to me.

Car History

The actual colour of the car was changed by George Alderman from from the original Caspian Blue to British Racing Green with a white roof. The first race was at the the Sebring 4h International Touring Race on March 31, 1967 & finished in 9th with George Alderman racing the entire 4 hours. The car also raced at the Marlboro Speedway Double 300 Trans Am on August 17, 1967 and finished in 6th. Later the car was then sold & took part in various street racing until it was parked & left for 40 years until in 2009 it was discovered again and is currently being restored by cmresto. More information about the car can be found at ponysite.de

Here is a video at Marlboro Speedway 1967, you have to look very closely to see the car.

One of the race rules of the Trans Am event was to only allow inline closed can motor, so the first job was to cut the sidewinder Pioneer chassis apart & use any bits from it for the Slot.it HRS2 chassis i was going to use.

Next up was to assemble the Slot.it HRS chassis together & fit to the body.

I used the back of the pioneer chassis to attach the back body screw, i then positioned & made two body posts on the front using plastic square tubing & alot of araldite.

with the chassis now mounted to the body i then needed to sort the interior layout. The pioneer interior is designed for sidewinder Mabuchi motors so it would not fit with the Slot.it boxer motor i was using. I cut a thin plastic sheet & sprayed matt black. The driver had to be cut in half & hot glued them to the sheet along with other parts.

Now to the painting stage, i used Hycote spray cans for this, I couldn't find the british racing green in non metallic so i used Brooklands racing green instead which was a still good match.

It was difficult finding decent photos of the car for doing the livery, Here's the decal sheet i made, which was later sent to Bryan King to print.

I then painted some of the body details in chrome

I used Slot.it alloy hubs with the Pioneer wheels trued down then painted to make into inserts, The first attempt I tried to true them went a bit pear shaped so Bryan King offered to trim them down for me.

The car performed ok on the track but with a bit more setup preparation it could have been alot better.
I qualified 7th, after six heats finished 7th & after the step-up finals finished 7th.
